Sands Point Police Department has a new police officer!

Please join me in welcoming our new officer, Vincent Cali, to our community.  Officer Cali was sworn in a couple of months ago and will undoubtedly contribute to our shared goal of ensuring a safe and secure environment for all.

AutoPay for certain payments to Village

The Village now has a payment option available that allows residents to set up automatic payments for water, alarm bills, and Village property taxes.

To sign up for autopay, residents can do the following:

  • Go to https://www.sandspoint.gov/ and click on the “Make Tax & Utility Payments” button.

  • Sign in to your registered account, or create and register your account if you have not done so already.

  • Once your account is registered and you are logged in, click on AutoPay Enrollment and opt into Auto-Pay. From there you can select what bills you wish to pay via Auto Pay and your preferred payment method.

  • When bills are available, you will receive an email prior to the payments being processed. At that point, if you wish to cancel that scheduled payment, you can do so using the reference number in the confirmation email.

  • Please note that the same convenience fees ($1.95 for e-check and 2.95% for credit card) that apply to manual online payments still apply with AutoPay.

If you have any questions regarding the Auto Pay feature, please email or call Paul Zuppello (paul@sandspoint.gov or 883-3044 ext. 106) at Village Hall.

Land Use Training and Education

  • We appreciate all the volunteer members, advisors, and staff to the Board of Zoning Appeals, Planning Board, and Board of Trustees who attended our periodic land use training session.

  • A big “Thank You” to John Filek, the new Executive Director of the Helen Keller National Center and his team, including Giovanna Love and Keith Sauders, for hosting our Land Use training session.

  • Also a shout-out to the Village Club of Sands Point for providing food, beverages, and service.

Meadow Carting replaces Dejana Carting

As you are likely well aware by now, and as we previously shared by email, Meadow Carting has replaced Dejana Carting as the waste-handling company in the Village.  (In fact, subsequent to Meadow winning the public bid, Meadow purchased all of the carting assets of Dejana and has taken over throughout the peninsula.)  The transition to Meadow went fairly well with not too many hiccups.  Some of their employees came over from Dejana and know our routes well.

If you have a problem with missed pickup or similar, please call Meadow at 516-338-0121.  Please record this number in your phone.

Further, if you have any issues that aren’t resolved by Meadow, please contact Village Hall at 516-883-3044 or carting@SandsPoint.gov.

Radioactive waste--not in Sands Point

Recently, in a nearby village, a truckload of garbage registered as radioactive, triggering alarms and causing that village higher costs to manage this waste.  If someone in your household is (sadly) on chemo, please dispose of any radioactive waste in accordance with regulations.  Do not dispose of it in the regular trash.

Noise buoys and rafts

The anti-noise buoys and rafts deployed this past summer were highly successful in reducing noise pollution onshore.  They have now been removed for the winter to protect their lifespan.

We extend our appreciation to the cooperating marine patrols from the Town and from Nassau County who wrote and issued over 100 marine tickets (returnable to our Village court).  As almost everyone recognizes, this was a much quieter summer than previous years.  We hope and believe that the word has been spread that blasting of amplified sound and music near our shores will not be tolerated.

New construction on Cow Neck Road

We have received calls from a number of residents concerned about new construction at the corner of Cow Neck Rd and Barkers Point Rd.  The lot is small and on a steep hill.  The owners had applied to the Town of North Hempstead a few years ago for a subdivision, which they received.  This property is not in Sands Point and we have no authority over their permit for construction.  We will monitor their work as it relates to curb cuts and other matters to the extent we are allowed.

GAC update

The granulated activated carbon filtration plant that is under construction at the Round Hill Water station (on Tibbits Lane), is coming closer to completion.

During construction, the original general contractor failed to perform, causing some significant delays.  Further, when they began construction, they removed a significant number of trees and foliage without permission.  The vendor has been declared in default.  The bonding/surety company has taken over the project and is appointing a new general contractor.  We expect that any and all cost overruns related to the general contractor’s default will be covered by the bonding/surety company at no cost to us.

We expect the GAC to be completed sometime in January, subject to Nassau County Department of Health approval.  The only items remaining after that are expected to be site work including driveways and restoration of landscaping.  We hope to restore the site to as “wilded” condition as possible.  We will be doing so with the assistance and guidance of the Village Arborists, a landscape architect, and a few volunteers.

Upon operation, Wells 2A & 5A, which are served by this GAC are expected to yield undetectable levels of PFAS and will be in compliance with all future, and currently expected, PFAS standards.

This will be a great success and the next major step in protecting the long-term water supplies of the Village.

Wishing everyone a good early start to winter.

Will be in touch soon.

Regards to all,

Peter A. Forman, Mayor
